Altitude Breathworks Origin

Where did the Idea begin

The idea for Altitude Breathworks was born in the mountains of Darjeeling.

I had enrolled for a Basic Mountaineering Course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling. After six months of rigorous physical preparation, I felt physically ready for the We were required to carry close to 16 kg and trek for three to four days to reach the Kanchenjunga base camp. I managed the physical demands well but then I encountered something I hadn't prepared for — Breathing at high altitude !!

The Approach

Science, grounded in practice.

At Altitude Breathworks, I don't see traditional pranayama and modern science as two separate worlds. Pranayama has been practised and refined for thousands of years in India through observation and practice. Modern science gives us a medium to understand what may be happening within the body when we breathe in particular ways. By weaving the two together, we can look at these age-old practices through a lens that many of us understand best today — science, physiology and logic. It is about asking questions. What happens in the body when we slow the breath? Why does nasal breathing matter? What changes when we alter the rhythm of breathing? How does the nervous system respond? And then what becomes different when we take these practices and apply it to the Mountains ? Finally, this was where my real curiosity and interest were married — How to breathe in high altitudes and the immense science behind it !! That is the foundation of Altitude Breathworks.

Our Vision
“We envision a world where altitude challenges the body, not the breath. Where every altitude feels easy, because you know how to breathe.”

To empower trekkers, high-altitude runners and mountaineers to optimise their breathing, physiological resilience and mental performance so they can safely and efficiently perform at high altitudes.

01

Care & Connection

You will be seen, heard and cared for. Every breath, run or trek is personal — and so is our approach. In the mountains, caring isn't optional; it's mandatory.

02

Science, Grounded in Practice

We pair modern respiratory physiology with traditional breathing practice — and test everything against real mountains and real miles.

03

Honesty Over Hype

We teach awareness, mechanics and technique. We don't promise magic, and we never make medical claims. Education first.

Where We're Going
